Zeltser is an American citizen who has been held captive by the Belarusian government since early this year. Although he had no plans to visit Belarus, he and his assistant arrived in Minsk on board of Russian financier Boris Berezovsky’s plane on March 12, 2008. There, Belarusian authorities charged Zeltser with the crime of possession of false documents and eventually for attempted commercial espionage and sentenced him to three years imprisonment. After repeated calls for his release by the United States government, Zeltser has yet to be freed and has faced inhuman and gulag-like conditions in prison and a penal colony.
