Zubr: We should struggle as one
Belarus Partisan published an interview with a current Zubr brand name owner, Anton Cialeznikau, residing in Warsaw. To a question whether Zubr had died, Anton replied:
- Zubr-Bison movement hasn’t disappeared per se, but stopped using its brand name. The organization is suggesting that all oppositional forces should unite into one movement which would be able to achieve changes in our country. By renouncing our brand, we want to set an example for other political parties. We call them to forget their local ambitions and struggle as one for our freedom.

Maybe he realizes this or maybe not: Anton just burried an important political organization. ZUBR was more than an organization: it was a symbol of non-violent resistance. My only explanation could be that the situation inside was so grave that there was no other choice. And the situation was grave because of the small mistakes made years ago by organizers. I am sure that ZUBRers will do a much better campaign in the future. ‘Unification of all forces’ is a bad idea.

Steve, I agree that the previous mistakes and gravity of the current situation led to such a move. As one of my acquaintances here in the States said, it had been expected. And sure, it will be very unfortunate if ZUBR eventually disbands as a structure.
However, I think that unification or better coordination of all pro-democratic forces is a must. All forces wouldn’t unites anyways.
