Hysteria

Vincuk Viacorka is arrested and sentenced to 15 days behind bars. The leader of Belarusian Popular Front had been one of the main personas behind Milinkevich even before he won in the Congress of Democratic Forces and became a single candidate. Viacorka was one of key members of the candidate’s HQ and now he and a few other campaigners are neutralized until way after the elections day.
A number of Belarusian informational and oppositional websites received a letter from, as it says, a KGB agent, giving away plans of the regime.
I decided to offer a concise run through the main points of the revelation:

We, officers of the Committee of State Security of Belarus, declare the following! After the television addresses of presidential candidates, Alaxandar Milinkevich and especially Alexander Kazulin, we began receiving messages from all around the country that Belarusians were actively discussing what they had heard, expressed their support for the oppositional politicians and negative remarks about the incumbent.

The information we have shows that the president’s rating has dropped. Even in Mahilou province, it does not exceed 23%. […]

We see that the authorities are scared. A meeting of the armed forces and law enforcement commanders, where Alexander Lukashenka presided, was purely hysterical. KGB Chief Stepan Sukhorenko got permission to execute immediate actions. The newly enacted laws – activities on behalf of an unregistered organization and involvement of under-aged persons – were applied. And that is why searches, identity checks and arrests have begun.

A 24\7 shadowing of Milinkevich and Kazulin and their main team members was ordered. Border control was toughened especially with Russia. Lists of automobile numbers were created of the disloyal and their family members.

Attacks on the organization Partnership is the beginning of our department’s provocations. Exemplars of falsified exit polls were prepared by our apparatus, and we know those people who did it. And what’s to expect? Here is a rundown:

    1. On the elections day, Lukashenka HQ will be located in the President Administration building. All the main chiefs will be summoned there.

    2. Elections day will not be a day-off for the nomenclature. They will have to be on the line and control the process.

    3. A day before the elections – personal surveillance after all leaders. During the elections day - non-admission of leaders to the masses.

    4. Internet and mobile connection will be blocked.

    5. Measures will be taken to hamper entrance to Minsk during the elections day. A special statement is being prepared that access to Minsk would be limited because of the possible provocations. Trains, buses to Minsk will be canceled. Automobiles will be checked.

    6. A scenario is being prepared to “find” guns and grenades in one of the oppositional offices, a garage, or a car. This is the main focus of the plan.

    […]
    9. A task is put forward to “find” a scoundrel with a large sum of money who would be handing it out to others for participation in street rallies. It is important to beware that some people are prepared, whom we don’t know, who will pretend to be opposition members.
    […]
    13. Task – one round only, more than 73% for Lukashenka, Milinkevich – not the second.
    […]

The letter is quite long and can be read in entirety on Vojur’s blog. The original is in Russian.

Listen to Father!

Filed under: Belarus Elections - Administrator @ 3:06 am

This is shocking! Belarus is gradually transforming back into a totalitarian state. A Belarusian pop ensemble campaigning for Lukashenka sings this totally weird chant:

Well-set and slim
He won’t teach you evil
Father can bridle anyone
Father is stronger than the rest

He will settle conflicts
He is reliable and calm
He just throws a glance – and you see
Who is the master in the house

Chorus:

Na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Listen to Father!
In the morning, day, and night…
Listen to Father!
If you feel bad
Listen to Father!
If you are ok
Listen to Father!!!

Note: Father or Bat’ka is the way many Lukashenka supporters call him. Father of the nation… How Orwellian does it sound! Belarus has gotten a godly icon…

You can watch a small video of this craze! It was posted by a Belarusian blogger Luft.

Milinkevich rally

March 8 turned out to be another harsh day in the clownery which Belarusian authorities called elections. According to BelaPAN, some 1,000 people turned out for Wednesday’s meeting with opposition candidate Aleksandr Milinkevich near a movie theater in a remote area in Minsk.
The contender had originally planned to hold the rally inside the theater but its administration canceled the arrangement at the last minute, saying that the building was hosting a children’s party.
When the meeting was over, the police arrested more than 10 participants and Milinkevich team members. Leader of Belarusian Popular Front Party Vincuk Viacorka and four other campaigners were detained when they were transporting the sound amplifying system after the meeting.
Trials are scheduled for tomorrow, and the question is how many Milinkevich HQ members stay on the loose on March 19. And what about dozens and dozens of arrested members of NGO’s and parties? How many of them will be neutralized during the most important day?
One of my acquaintances suggested that those people who lived outside the capital should come to Minsk three days before March 19, as the special forces would probably encircle the capital, and would not let anyone in, probably would detain regional activists on their way to maidan.
The situation is saddening. The immense fear which overwhelmed Belarusian society will stop many from even considering participation in post-electoral protests. Only mass street rallies can make the police weigh in their actions before they obey some crazy orders. I’m afraid that small or even mid-sized demonstrations – like in 1996 when around 50,000 people rallied in Minsk – can be brutally dispersed. Some people might be seriously hurt. Will Milinkevich and Kazulin be able to convince the society of fear to wake up and stand up for their freedom? How many is needed to stop a soldier from shooting? Or will they fight until the last bullet? Unfortunately, some of them will. Some of them allegedly already have blood on their hands. And both Milinkevich and Kazulin vowed to investigate political murders. So it’s not just the society of fear that we have in Belarus, but also the regime which acts like this because it scared its pants off of a revolution.
